Assam is located in India’s north-eastern region. It is known for its tribal culture. As a result, there is a lot of tribal influence in the variety of festivals celebrated over there. The costumes, the dancing, and the singing have a peculiar charm. Assam has its share of festivals but the people of Assam also celebrate popular festivals like Holi, Diwali, and Eid.

Visiting Assam during one of its prominent festivals will give you a different insight into the land’s culture and traditions. Those who are interested in folk stories and indigenous tribes must visit Assam during the festivals. Here’s a list of some of the popular festivals celebrated in Assam.

  1. Bihu: Bihu is Assam’s most famous festival. It marks the commencement of the agricultural season. Assamese people offer the first crop to their God, Brai Shibrai and follow it up with prayers. Bihu is usually celebrated in April and the festivities last throughout the month. People wear traditional clothes, create a bonfire and sing folk songs. Assam Tourism arranges exciting events to enthral tourists during Bihu.
     
  2. Ambubachi Festival: This festival is related to tantric practices. The Ambubachi festival is associated with Assam’s famous Kamakhya Devi temple. This temple is located in Assam’s popular city, Guwahati. It lasts for four days. People visit the temple during the festival and explore the fairs and stalls set up nearby.
     
  3. The Majuli Festival: Majuli festival is held near the Majuli islands. This festival is renowned for the gathering of different tribes. Locals come together and display handcrafted items for the tourists. There are several cultural activities planned during the festival.
     
  4. Dehing Patkai: This festival is organized by the Government of Assam. Dehing Parkai gives an environment-friendly message of saving the elephants and the forests. This festival is held in January in the Tinsukia district. Tourists can enjoy elephant safari and adventure sports during the festival.
     
  5. Tea Festival: If you are a tea lover, then you will enjoy Assam’s tea Festival. It is held in Assam’s Jorhat, which is known for its tea. This festival is held in November. You can taste different types of tea during this three-day festival.
     
  6. Raas Lila in Majuli: Raas Lila is associated with Lord Krishna who is worshipped across India. Krishna devotees will love this festival as people of Majuli perform dramas dedicated to praising Lord Krishna. It is an exciting amalgamation of mythology, spirituality, and culture.
     
  7. Baishagu Festival: Assam’s Bodo Kacharis celebrate Baishagu Festival with a lot of joy. It is their new year. The festival is held in April and like any other new year celebration, it includes singing, dancing, and celebrations.
